UK Domain Extension

.UK Domain Names

Domains that end .uk (i.e. yourdomain.uk, not to be confused with domains that end .co.uk, .org.uk, etc.) became available for registration on 10 June 2014.

Some important information to bear in mind when registering the new .uk domains:

Checking your rights to .uk

For the majority of users the equivalent .uk domain was automatically reserved when it launched on 10 June 2014. So if you have a unique .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, .net.uk, .plc.uk or .ltd.uk the .uk equivalent will be reserved for 5 years up until 10 June 2019 as long as your existing domain remains registered.

To successfully complete a .uk registration, the owner contact information must be an exact match to the owner contact information of the equivalent existing .uk domain name, otherwise your registration will fail. Furthermore, if your existing .uk domain name resides at a registrar other than us, Nominet will email the registrant to confirm the registration.

For names that shared the same website name but had different domain name endings (i.e. yourdomain.co.uk and yourdomain.org.uk) you can check whether you have the rights to the new .uk by using the rights lookup tool.

If you decide not to register the new .uk equivalent domain before 10 June 2019 it will then become available for anyone else to register, but your existing domain will of course still be yours as long as it remains registered to you.

Registering a new domain

Since 10 June 2014, it’s been possible to register a website with just the .uk – no .co required.

The rules are largely the same for existing .co.uk and .org.uk domains, with these exceptions:

  • Where the registrant is overseas an admin contact (address for service) is required.
PO Boxes are not acceptable in the address.
  • While any address is accepted for owner contact, when using a UK address, country code must be one of GB, GG, JE or IM.
Note: UK is not an accepted country code.
  • Admin contact must have a country code of GB, GG, JE or IM.
Note: UK is not an accepted country code.

Pricing and registration duration is the same as existing .uk domain types.
